Broken light pole triggers emergency outage across two parishes

March 04, 2026

Several communities in Manchester and St Elizabeth were left without electricity this morning after a motor vehicle crash damaged a light pole, forcing an emergency outage.

The Jamaica Public Service Company Limited, JPS, said the outage was necessary to facilitate the replacement of a broken pole following the accident.

In a notice issued earlier today, the power company said the disruption is scheduled to last from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Areas affected include Butt Up, Downs, New Forest, Comma Pen, Alligator Pond, Nain, Stephen Run, Gazeland, Junction, Bull Savannah and surrounding communities.

Photographs shared by JPS show a utility pole snapped and leaning across a roadway, with wires hanging low over the area.

JPS said the outage is required to safely carry out repairs and restore normal service to the affected sections of both parishes.

Motorists and residents are being urged to exercise caution in the affected areas while repair work is underway.
